Thomas Peters School

01/08/2008

On Tuesday 13th May 2008, Isa Davies, the Chair, made a visit to the Thomas Peters School. Thomas Peters was a courageous Afro-American whose efforts made possible the founding of Freetown.

Peters, though poor and uneducated, found the courage to travel to England in search of help for his people. He was totally committed to freedom, and fought for it until the very last day of his life. More than anyone else, he exemplifies the spirit of hope and determination that gave birth to the city of Freetown.

The school is situated on Percival Street in the central area of Freetown. The condition of the school, like most Government primary schools, is very bad. There is a dedicated Head Teacher, who would give anything for the school to be rebuilt. It has been in existence in its present site for over 15 years. The toilet facilities are unsanitary and pose a health risk to the young people who have to use them. The location of the cesspit right in the middle of the 'playground' is an additional threat to the children's health.

The benches that the children sit on have no backs and it is really pitiful to see the conditions which the primary children are made to endure in search of 'education'! The photographs clearly demonstrate the conditions that the children experience on a daily basis.

The Lottie Betts-Priddy Education Trust is determined to provide basic facilities for this primary school, but needs your support to fulfil this responsibility and play its part to "achieve the Millennium Development Goal of having all the world's children in school by 2015"
