Johnny Sow and Vida Scannell, 2009 graduates of Alleyn's School in West Dulwich will be donating a month of their time during their gap year to work with the Thomas Peters and Regent Rural Education Community Primary School.
Johnny has a keen interest in maths and physics and has started studying physics at Nottingham University. But apart from being tall, dark and handsome, there are many other ways in which Johnny counters the conventional image of a 'geek' or a 'nerd'. His interests are broad and he enjoys working with others, especially children. He is an athlete, having captained his school's football and hockey teams. During his secondary school days he tutored children in English and maths in an after-school programme. In January, Johnny taught maths and science to the children as well as building up our database on the two schools.
Vida loves art and being creative. At a Locations Agency where she worked prior to going to Sierra Leone, she helped find locations for photo shoots and filming where she was able to use her arts and crafts expertise to make things for her boss who was a freelance arts and crafts writer. Vida loves any sport but netball is a particular favourite; she also played the piano and cello. Vida organised fun-filled, stimulating activities for the children at the end of the school year in June and July. She is now studying Classics at Bristol University.
Johnny and Vida have been extremely generous in not only donating their time but also funding their travel and accommodation. We are delighted that these two have linked up with us and hope the experience will be a good one for them, the Charity and the children.
Mary Harper, Johnny's mother, kindly provided a suitcase full of pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, crayons, felt tip pens, exercise books and geometry sets for the children to use. The children were overjoyed to receive these gifts which will ensure that they can take full advantage of Johnny's maths skills.
