News » Fun for the Whole Family!
June 30, 2011
The 2011 Family Fun Day at Lewisham Methodist Church went off well, despite occasional showers. Starting off in bright sunshine, the day began on a high note with the wonderful drumming of the all-woman group—Foroyaa.
After guests had sampled the various stalls and attractions – bouncy castle, face-painting, tombola, lucky dip, African fashion and hand-made stationery, there was an hour-long ‘Talent Showcase’ featuring the rapping, singing, and street-dancing of various young friends of the Charity. One group was brought together by Louie Silcott and featured Tragik, Blessed, Taunts, Pure, Johnny Montana, Georga, Delicia Edgar and Topman. Sound engineer, Naz, accompanied them. Tanisha Hyde and Nathan Brown closed the show with a well-received street dance display.
A wide variety of traditional West African food was on sale including Jollof rice and chicken stew, black-eyed peas, plantains, sweet potatoes, and rice ’akara’ and ricebread. A Caribbean flavour was introduced with beef and vegetable patties. Treats included several types of muffins, ginger beer, popcorn and marshmallows dipped in a chocolate fountain. We are grateful to the helpers who kept the barbecue grill going to provide a “burger and bangers” option and the drinks stand did brisk business all day.
The top prize in the raffle, an iPod shuffle, was won by Charles Lefevre and our traditional ‘Africa’ cake was won in the Guess the Weight’ competition by Sevia John.
The day would not have been possible without the help and support of many friends who turned up to help us set up, to run stalls and clean up afterwards. A big Thank You to all of them!
Tesco (Lewisham High Street branch) generously provided several bags of coal for the barbecue grill as well as hamburger buns. A note of appreciation is due also to the Lewisham Methodist Church community who generously allowed us to use their premises once again.
